Secret Santa rules: how to play

Secret Santa is simple: everyone draws one name, buys that person a gift, and keeps it secret until the exchange. These rules keep it fair and fun.

1. Draw names fairly

Nobody should draw themselves, and couples usually shouldn't draw each other. An online name draw handles both and sends each person their match privately.

2. Agree on a budget

Pick one number and stick to it. $20 to $30 works for friends and offices; families often go a little higher.

3. Share a wishlist

Two or three ideas per person saves everyone time. Include sizes, favourite colours, or things to avoid.

4. Keep it secret

Don't tell anyone who you drew. If you need to ask your match something, ask anonymously.

5. Set a date for the reveal

Exchange gifts together, in person or on a video call, and let everyone guess their Santa before the reveal.

Fun twists

Try a theme ("something handmade", "something under $10"), a white-elephant round after the exchange, or a Naughty-or-Nice check before gifts are opened.
